HA NOI — The Ministry of Information and Communications is looking into the possibility of adding an 11th digit to mobile phone numbers in order to increase the available permutations.
According to analysts, a longer mobile phone number has been proposed and debated several times, but it has now become necessary to bolster the repository of mobile phone numbers. It would also create favourable conditions for companies in building brands with their own mobile phone numbers.
Telecom firms are in favour of the change because an 11-digit number would allow them to sell 100 million cell phone numbers, instead of the 10 million units possible with only 10.
Currently, Viet Nam has about 120 million mobile phone subscribions and that number is expected to increase in the near future.
