HA NOI – Smoking is the cause of around 40,000 deaths each year in Viet Nam, three times the number of traffic fatalities.
Medical costs for lung cancer, chronic blockades and other smoking-related diseases total VND2.3 trillion per year.
At a recent seminar which aimed to assess Viet Nams capacity to prevent and control the impacts of smoking, Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Thi Xuyen said Viet Nam was facing a series of challenges such as a high rate of male smokers and a common social tolerance for smoking.
