HA NOI – More than 8,000 Vietnamese went to foreign countries to work last month, bringing the total to over 54,000 in the past seven months, according to the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.
The most popular destinations were Taiwan with more than 20,500 people, Korea with more than 13,500, Malaysia with nearly 5,900 and Japan with around 3,500.
Department of Overseas Labour deputy head Dao Cong Hai said Viet Nam's target to send 87,000 workers overseas this year seemed achievable.
He said Taiwan and Malaysia had a high demand for workers. Malaysia's Ministry of Human Resources, in particular, has allowed its enterprises to employ 45,000 foreign workers this year.
Hai said that in order to ensure the stable development of labour exporting, to help reduce poverty, Viet Nam needed to focus on sourcing skilled workers to suit the demand of destinations offering high incomes, such as Japan and Korea.
He said there should be good co-ordination between vocational schools and labour export companies so the latter could be more proactive in employment negotiations and initiations. – VNS
